Basic materials including aluminium, cement and steel are central to our economies, but their production accounts for approximately 25% of global CO2 emissions, and around 16% of European greenhouse gas emissions. To accomplish the carbon neutrality goals of the Paris Climate Agreement the materials sector requires significant changes and a robust policy framework. The Climate Friendly Materials Platform will stage a COP25 side event to discuss their recently published report Building Blocks for a Climate Neutral European Industrial Sector. It examines policy solutions to transform the basic materials sectors to carbon neutrality by 2050. DIAKLIM Executive Board member and co-author Karsten Neuhoff (DIW Berlin) will join the discussion to introduce the report.
