Europe in crisis mode: What will become of climate policy?

16 Sep 2022
ZEW Mannheim

The war in Ukraine and the related developments on the international energy markets show how great the dependencies on fossil fuels are in the economy and private households. The Federal Minister of Economics is giving tips on how to save energy, the public is discussing how to reduce the heating temperature at night, and the social issue is taking on new urgency in view of the high energy prices. At the same time, the war in Ukraine makes it clear that effective climate protection has a geopolitical significance. But how can climate policy be shaped within a European framework under crisis conditions without risking social or economic upheaval? How can we secure energy supplies in the short term without creating renewed dependencies and fossil infrastructures? Finally, what order does our climate policy need?

These and other questions will be discussed by:

  • Dr. Franziska Brantner
Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection
  • Saori Dubourg
Member of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE
  • Prof. Dr. Sebastian Rausch
Head of the ZEW Research Unit "Environmental and Climate Economics"
  • Prof. Achim Wambach, PhD
    President of ZEW
