Greenhouse Gas Neutrality by 2050: How to Implement the Green Deal

With the Green Deal, the EU aims to become the first greenhouse gas-neutral continent by 2050. The "Fit for 55" legislative package sets an interim target of reducing greenhouse gases by 55 percent by 2030. Germany aims to achieve greenhouse gas neutrality as early as 2045 with the amended Climate Protection Act.

Against this back­­­­­­­­­­ground, visions for the trans­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­formation process that have been adopted and now need to be implemented will be discussed at the event. The online conference is organized by the research project DIPOL, which is part of the Dialogue on Climate Economics within the framework of the BMBF funding measure Economics of Climate Change II.

The basis for the discussion is the DIPOL final report "Pathways to Greenhouse Gas Neutrality by 2050. The Influence of Policy, Technology and Behavior on a Successful Transformation". Here, a number of alternative scenarios for achieving the German and European climate targets were developed in collaboration with stakeholders from politics, industry, and civil society and examined with regard to the impact of limited technology availability, political frameworks, and potential behavioral changes. The report is based on relevant expertise in integrated modeling of climate change pathways, micro-simulation of the distributional impact of energy and environmental policies on private households, and stakeholder dialogue procedures.
